I really liked this book a lot! The illustrations by well known Santa Barbara artist Jeremy Harper are bright and enlivening. The text by Jon Pyzel is dreamy yet believable, and spoken in the direct language that children tend to use with one another. But what I liked the very most is that it fosters the idea that children are competent people that can pack up and sail an outrigger canoe to a campsite by themselves, where they are MET by their parents who join them for a weekend of fun, surf, camping and snorkeling. They then break camp, pack up the canoe with the children who then appear to sail home alone. It is a different twist for a children's book, and the illustrations of the children look as though they are about ages 6 through maybe 13. Well done!Product details

Love reading this adventure book with my 5 year old son! Sailing canoes are unique and a fun way for kids to get a glimpse of Hawaiian culture. Sailing and camping with your friends and a few parents, does it get better?

Beautifully illustrated and heartfelt written, this is an adventure that will keep your child alert and you dreaming. Jon Pyzel was able to see through the children's eyes and convey the vision throughout the colorful pages of The Great Sailing Canoe Adventure. A true Hawaii adventure.
My 5 and 2 year old both love this story for many reasons. It's very inspiring and my son always asks if we can go camping afterwards. This story ties in natural elements in such pure form and shows what life can be like in the islands. As an adult, I find that it takes me into a dreamy state and leaves me wanting to go outside!
We received this book as a gift from some friends in Hawaii. Our five year old loves it. The story seems to have a nice blend of youthful and Hawaiian themes. He relates to the social part of it, and we love the questions it prompts on marine life, and even the landscape illustrations. He always wants to know if he has been there! Would highly recommend this for kids ages 3-8. Great gift, and a great way to support a local artist.
I loved this book! It really takes you back to the joy of exploration and adventure in childhood with fantastic artistry and vibrant color. My 11yo son and 7yo daughter loved the story of children experiencing the excitement of journeying along the coast and camping under the stars in beautiful Hawaii. I would reccomend this book to anyone wanting to return to that feeling we all had as children -- unbridled happiness and awe in the world around us.
