Butterfly Lane Firefly Hollow Volume 2 T L Haddix 9780615828367 Books

I enjoyed this book as much as I did Firefly Hollow. I was surprised that there was such a large time gap between the end of Firefly Hollow and the beginning of Butterfly Lane. The imagery is very vivid, and having grown up in Eastern Kentucky, being familiar with the scenery, the book paints a beautiful picture. I think the author did a good job portraying the characters, their emotions, and the experiences they went through.

I loved John's character. He is the son of Sarah and Owen from Firefly Hollow. Watching how his characters learns, grows and changes through the book was great. He started out as the oldest child looking out for his sibblings, to being a young man going off to college. By the end he is a grown man with a family of his own.

Zanny's character was so realistic. While I have seen a lot of negative reviews about her character, I liked her. After having been abandoned by her mother, despised and abused by her father, only important to her grandmother as long as she was useful, she lacked proper understanding and knowledge of what unconditional love was. After having been saved from a bully by Emma (John's sister), she becomes very close to the Campbell family. As Zanny gets older, she is has trouble in her marriage and with other relationships because she always thinks there is a "but" coming. She grew up feeling that love was conditional, and it will take her time to get to the point that she understands the love of her husband and in-laws in unconditional.

I look forward to reading more of this series. With the first two books, once I started them I couldn't put them down. Although they are not exactly fast paced, I was able to get through them quickly.

Butterfly Lane Firefly Hollow Volume 2 T L Haddix 9780615828367 Books Reviews

This is the second book in the series and is about John and Zanny, his wife. John is Owen and Sarah's oldest son. They marry young because they are in love and she ends up pregnant. After five years, they start having problems, not because they've fallen out of love, but because they're not communicating well. When one of John's coworkers sets him up to try and break up their marriage, she almost succeeds. Zanny has a miscarriage and then john's younger sister returns home pregnant and unmarried, not such a scandal in the 80s but still not really accepted in their town. And yes, it is still paranormal, but this time, john's oldest can talk to ghosts. Come to find out, that trait has been passed down through Zanny's family. This is a great second book and can't wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a great story and following characters in more than one book. I love that these are long stories and complete in themselves, but starting at the first and following the family is even better. Thanks for another awesome read!
We started this series with Owen and Sarah. Owen had unique abilities, passed down through his mother’s family. This particular story belongs to their oldest son, John and Suzanne, known as Zanny to her loved ones. Their story starts really when they were in grade school, but John didn’t realize it until one Christmas when he was home from college. They loved, they married, and then things weren’t going to great and Zanny caught him in a compromising position that he wanted no part of. Things fell apart for the two of them, so this story is really them rebuilding themselves. Finding that spark that pulled them together in the first place.

In the process they learn a lot about themselves, each other, and their family. And we get to see Owen and Sarah, Jack and Gilly, and all of their children. Owen and Sarah have John, Emma, Ben, Rachel, Amelia. Jack and Gilly have Michelle and Rick. And before the book is done we know that something is going on with Emma and Ben.

Ms. Haddix takes her gentle paranormal story-line and expands it to not just include those that shift shapes, but those who perceive those that are in the next realm. I love this Campbell family. They are understanding, loving, and wise. I’m so glad that I’m going to be reading about this family throughout the year. The question is, would I recommend this book as much as the first one? Yes, I would! Each book is a standalone, so you don’t have to buy the next ones. BUT you will. ;)
